Ho-ho on NO?
I simply don't get the whole snow-&eggnog-thing we do here over Xmas. Take the traditional Xmas fruit cake, for example - snow-like frosting, Holly & Reindeer just don't feel like a sweltering December holiday in Tsaneen! If we could produce creative geniuses such as Walter Battiss, Elvis Blue & Garth Stroebel, surely we can come up with something more shweshwe. Don't get me wrong - I'm not thinking Tafelbergkoeke or something resembling a driepootpot or Eland trophy. Just something unique - something that would bring back memories of family holidays, xmas in Jeffrey's & a beautiful Baobab tree in Musina. Any suggestions?

HaPpY BiRthDay AnNEtjie ♥

Happy birthday Captain Annetjie! Youre the BEST sister, the best baker, the best wife & mother... I love you so so much! happy happy and thank you for keep us sane ♥
Fudge pan
Is it a cage?? Is it a toy??
NO people its a FUDGE PAN!!
Yummmy! How cool is this? You can cut your fudge in 1 action. All the same sizes, no effort and I'm sure this can be used for brownies as well. http://www.kezia.co.za/FudgePan.html
(they have fudge pans, rusk pans etc)
I would love one of these under my Christmas tree, and to think - I don't even LIKE fudge - yeah right! (nê Megan..)
Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving day to all our friends and customers from the USA! We hope that you share this day with your loved ones, celebrating your blessings, a "good harvest" and just generally enjoying the time ♥
Celebrating being single
We are just SO proud of our new cupcake box & gribbons!
Now being single doesn't mean that you have to be a wallflower anymore. Celebrate your cupcakes' individuality by dressing your box with a gribbon that matches her personality - a definite show stopper....
Food & Movies

Food and movies go together like, well, popcorn and movies or in my case avo and ginger... Since food is one of the central themes of life, it stands to reason that it would make a good theme for the cinema. I love watching food movies! Have you ever noticed that most of them are about (obviously) food and life/ relationships?
This got me thinking about my relationship with food. I have my ups and downs, my good times and my NOT so good times, inspired times and my JUNK FOOD times.
It also took me back to this movie my mom and sister watched -"Babette's feast". I wonder if this could be where Ana's love of food started? Those days, to me, it was just a weird movie about an onld lady preparing funny stuffed animals and slaving away the whole day..
I’ve seen many lists of food movies that include flicks that have a great food scene or two. Movies such as Diner, Mystic Pizza, Eating Raoul & The Mistress of Spices often show up
While some of them might include some food scenes,i't's mostly not centered around it. For me, to be a true food movie, the film should embody the same trait that makes for a great chef; passion for food. You should leave the theater so inspired that you want to either sprint straight to a great restaurant or to the kitchen.
Tonight make your favourite risotto (or get your brother-in-law to make you some) and rent a few - one for entree, one for main and maybe a few for dessert... My suggestion: Babette's' Feast, Chocolate, Waitress, Julie & Julia, Ratatouille, Women on top and Tortilla Soup.

Bon voyage, Little cupcake!

The only reason you might not know her, is because she's been so busy working hard (& I mean really hard) behind the scenes at 34T
Riana does all our graphic design. So- without her the "g" in gorgeous wrappers & the "b" in beautiful boxes just wouldn't have been possible!
She'll be in the East (that is the Far East, not Nigel) for the next few weeks investigating some stuff that's going to be very beneficial to all of us. We wish you a very safe journey, il mio amico! And really hope you come back with a whole new bag of tricks... Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Wedding Cake Pops

SR

Not that I think it’s quite enough reason to dampen any feelings of patriotism, but I really feel kind of jealous....
The 18th of October is National Chocolate Cupcake Day in America
I’m sure that a National Cupcake Day of any sorts can contribute to unity in SA a lot more than the forces in charge might envisage. Just picture people laying down their spears, pangas & voorlaaiers and picking up something sweet instead
On such a grande holiday, my nomination for this year would be:Bailey's Irish Cream and chocolate Kahlua frosted mudslide cupcakes from Endless Simmer
(http://www.endlesssimmer.com/)
Oh yes – sorry my beloved children. This is a very adult cupcake version. Maybe the cupcake of the year will be more forgiving in 2011......
Or maybe we can just replace the Bailey’s with Amarula – NOW THÁT WOULD BRING BACK SOME PATRIOTISM!!

Happy Birthday San!

We all know that timid little office girl who sips her Rooibos in the corner, does her work & disappears without anyone noticing to have a solitary birthday cupcake at home. Well- thát girl is not Sanet! She’s the one that makes false eyelashes from Post-it notes, needs only a single stuffed horse for a puppet show & turns every photo shoot into an memorable occasion....
For you who don't know – Sanet is the “3” in Three For Tea & deserves the biggest birthday cake ever made. (Her birthday also falls on Mother Teresa day in Albania, kuptoj?)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SISTA!

Homespun beauties

According to our latest blog poll, Vanilla is by far the most favourite icing flavour around. Although I absolutely löve vanilla beans, my choice for icing would be a little more daring. But I can tell you, doesn't matter what flavour they turn out to be - one of these little beauties from Homespun can come to my party anytime!
Find them at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Roodepoort-South-Africa/Homespun/352917052008?ref=search
*The word vanilla comes from the Spanish vanillia, meaning "small pod"

“How can a society that exist on instant mashed potatoes, packaged cake mixes, frozen dinners and instant cameras teach patience to its young” – Paul Sweeny
I totally agree with mr Sweeny – except when it comes to Ina Paarmans’ Instant Brownie mix. Bless her soul
My children make them all the time - & believe me when I say that the patience those two have to demonstrate while it’s baking, is nothing short of the accomplishments of a very brave soldier
The chocolaty-fudgy-brownie aroma that fills the air is enough to drive anyone crazy, but they wait....noses almost pushed against the oven door, peeping (patiently) at the timer every minute
But they wait - & that’s the big thing, the lesson, the moral of the story
..Or it might just be me craving brownies for a little guilty pleasure later..

get REAL Martha
Some people get their thrill from jumping off bridges with only a rope & a lot of faith between them and mother earth. Others go to motor shows to gawk at new marvels of engineering & nature. I'm sure the rush I got when I saw these Hummingbird cupcakes from Get Real Martha is the exact same thing. Dried pineapple flowers? Come-on... I can even smell it, sitting here across the globe! Think it sounds a little obsessed? Just go and have a look (http://getrealmartha.blogspot.com/2010/04/hummingbird-cupcakes-with-pineapple.html )
- & thèn decide how you are going to get your kick this weekend

Time, time, time.....

We really like giving you things. Things like a little time to do something just for yourself
Just follow these easy steps:
1. Bake your favourite cake using a quick, trusted recipe or buy a cake from a reputable source
2. Strip the piece of tape from your 34T cake wrapper
3. Wrap it around your cake & decorate with fresh flowers
4. Sit back, relax & wait for the compliments to come streaming in.........

Spring = picnic

With Spring in the air we’ve got two things on our minds: picnic & le grande piquenique
South-Africa has got it all for the feast: gorgeous weather, quilts by Granny, beautiful, beautiful scenery, juicy summer fruits & hopefully good friends for everyone....
The only thing I would love to include are these eye-catching wooden utensils from V&A Museum Shop in London. Biodegradable, stylish & elegant- what more can you ask for in picnic tools?
Bringing a little elegance to the party, I could just picture the husband with a piece of ripe watermelon dripping from one of those well-designed handles
Hope to find them here soon
Or go to London soon
& have a picnic vèry soon......

BAKING TIPS
· To prevent cake from sticking, place the cake that has come out of the oven on a damp cloth for a couple of minutes.
· Add a pinch of baking soda to icing to prevent hardening and cracking.
· To avoid dried fruit or nuts from sinking to the bottom of a batter, coat them lightly with flour first.
· Add a few drops of lemon juice when creaming butter and sugar to make the job easier.
· Cool baked goods completely before freezing or they will end up soggy.
· 1Tbs dried yeast is equivalent to 25g fresh yeast
· To turn plain flour into self –raising flour sieve 2tsp of baking powder into 225g plain flour
· To make self-raising whole-wheat flour add 10ml of baking powder to every 250ml whole-wheat flour
· To make your own baking powder, sieve 10ml cream of tartar into 5ml baking soda
· Always chill pastry dough before rolling and cutting, as it relaxes the gluten.
· For feather light muffins stir only until the ingredients are moist. Extra stirring will make them tough.
· Bake for the minimum time given in the recipe before opening the oven door. If the door is opened too soon, it may cause some cakes to flop.
· If a cake looks as though it is browning too quickly, cover the top loosely with foil.
· If baking several cake layers, arrange them on the oven shelves so that they are not directly beneath one another.
· When measuring with a spoon, don’t hold the spoon directly over the bowl or you may accidentally add too much.
· All spoon measurements are level unless otherwise stated.
